Learners bring more than just their academic skills into the classroom. They bring in their valuable lived experiences and unique perspectives.
In my classroom, students are expected to engage with one another to develop an understanding of complex concepts. During a typical class, students will be presented with a problem and will rely on their intuition, past experiences, and collaborative skills to solve it. Recognizing patterns within their problem solving will lead them to develop heuristics that field experts use.
Students take ownership of their learning by monitoring and evaluating their progress and growth toward mastery of competencies. Opportunities for students to revisit material and learn at their own pace is central to my teaching methodology. Monitoring progress cannot improve student outcomes unless students are given the opportunity to take action. Students have opportunities to revisit concepts they have an incomplete understanding of and further their knowledge on topics they've mastered. Every student deserves to learn something new every day.
Mistakes are a valued part of the learning process. Mistakes often come from connections to the content. As a class, we leverage that thinking to develop a more complete understanding of a concept.
My pedagogy is constantly improving and being influenced by research and those I work with. Both my teaching teams and students continue to improve my ways of thinking and doing in the classroom.
In all, learning happens as a team. We work together as a team to develop a deeper understanding of concepts and create a brave space where all students are valued for what they bring to the table.
